The only way is up for Severn Stars ahead of the start of the 2023 Netball Super League season, according to new head coach Jo Trip.

Stars finished bottom of the Netball Super League last season, with three wins from their 20 matches, but there is a renewed optimism in Worcester following sweeping changes during the off season.

Kiwi Trip is now at the helm, replacing compatriot Melissa Bessell, while just two of last season’s squad of 12 remain.

In their place has arrived a host of new faces with an emphasis on youth, something Trip hopes will be the start of new success for the franchise.

“I’m really excited about having a really young squad, to see their growth, their maturation in the game and as individuals off the court,” said Trip.

“Consistency is a big word that is spoken about year after year and to see players get that consistency and be that presence on court every time they step out.

“We are a lot younger, I think I bring the average age a lot! Otherwise it’s about 26 and younger so the girls have a lot of longevity in their legs, and they are still learning and developing.

“For us it’s about exposing a lot of our players to the environment – I have five players who have not been in NSL teams or played in this league.

“That will be a win in itself, getting them exposed to this level and seeing what they can do.”

Yet despite their youthful composition, Trip has big aims for her side even if expectations are more muted this season.

Trip has recruited players with plenty of Super League experience, including South African shooter Sigi Burger and defender Rebekah Airey as well as new Kiwi shooter Grace Namana, meaning there are hopes of pulling off a shock result or two.

“We have set internal goals of winning 50% of our games,” she added. “Coming from the bottom last year and having a completely new team, I think that is realistic.

“It’s also a push and obviously I wouldn’t say no to winning more, but that’s what we are determined to do.

“We are exciting, we are unknown, and I think we will surprise some teams. Our goal will be to take some of those top teams or become a top team ourselves.”
