BILLY Bodin is on track to hit his individual goal target for the season after bagging another brace for Oxford United.

The 30-year-old netted his sixth goal in seven appearances, as United beat Exeter City 4-1, to seal a place in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Bodin also scored twice in the 4-0 win against Port Vale two weeks ago, as the attacking midfielder enjoys a fruitful spell in front of goal.

Last year, Bodin bagged seven goals in his first season for United, leaving him one short of surpassing that tally this campaign.

“At the start of the season, I always try and set myself a few little targets,” he said.

“With the bad start we had this season, I scrapped that for a few weeks.

“Every player will have certain targets they want to reach.

“Normally, however many I score the year before, I try and beat that, and then I set myself another little target.

“It’s good to have little targets like that, it pushes you and it pushes your teammates if they have them as well.

“I’m one away, and I’ve got another target which is slightly more than that, but I’ll keep that quiet for now.

“Hopefully I can beat that as well, and keep helping the team.”

Bodin started the FA Cup tie on the bench, before replacing Marcus McGuane in the 64th minute.

He doubled United’s lead 15 minutes later, and put the U’s 4-0 up with two minutes to go.

“When you’re sat on the bench, that’s what you’re thinking about doing – coming on and making an impact,” Bodin said.

“The manager always says to subs ‘make you sure make an impact’.

“The first one landed perfectly at my feet, and it was a great start.

“Thankfully, Tyler [Goodrham] played Gats [Gatlin O’Donkor] a nice ball through and he just missed it, but it managed to get through to me.

“It’s a great feeling, especially when you come off the bench, to get two goals.”

He added: “Thankfully they fell nicely for me, and I managed to put them away.

“You try too hard when you’re not getting them chances, you end up either dropping too deep or maybe taking an extra touch, rather than just getting a touch and finishing.

“Sometimes the harder you work off the ball, the luckier you get.

“Those little chances that we were probably missing at the start of the season seem to be falling our way now.”

On who he wants to face in the third round, Bodin said: “It would be nice to play a big team but it doesn’t really bother me who we get.

“We’re going to try and win the game no matter who we play, whether it’s a Premier League side or League Two and Conference.”

The U’s have hit 11 goals in their last four matches, and Bodin is glad to see things clicking in attack.

“It’s a shame that we started the way that we did at the start of the season because all of last season, we were full of goals and attacking threat,” he said.

“To get back to playing like that, and scoring goals, is what we want.”
