Villagers are opposing plans for a new 5G communications tower which could be built in the centre of a residential area.

A number of people from Langford Village, in Bicester, have formally opposed the building of a 16-metre-high mast which would improve coverage for local mobile services.

The tower, proposed by telecoms company CK Hutchison Networks, would be situated on Peregrine Way, on the verge near the junction with Merlin Way and on the opposite side of the road.

The application was first made on July 4, 2022, and includes three additional ancillary equipment cabinets and associated ancillary works.

Several opposing comments from individuals are present on the application, as well as from groups and organisations such as Langford Village Community Association (LVCA).

In LVCA’s comments it is written: “LVCA representing 5000 plus residents of Langford Village is objecting to this proposed application.

“Whilst there is support for the mast, the proposed site is not appropriate. It is in a residential area and on the main thoroughfare through the estate.

“Having visited the one situated in Leach Road, Bicester, they look like a mini-Post Office tower.

“There are many more suitable locations on Langford Village, which have been mentioned in residents’ objections.

“We feel the company is proposing the cheapest, most convenient way for them rather than what is best for Langford Village.

“There have been no notifications regarding this proposal. We as the Community Association are supposed to be listed as consultees for any applications relating to planning on the estate, and yet we have received nothing.

“There is no consultation with the houses nearby, why? We hope the Cherwell District Council Planning Committee will turn this proposal down.”

A Langford Facebook poll conducted by LVCA showed a clear majority of residents – by 2 to 1 – favoured the local area having such a mast, but with a significant number of comments also arguing that it shouldn’t be placed in its presently planned location.

Public opposition comments on the application from individuals ranged from potential health concerns to aesthetic objections.

One commenter, from Merganser Drive, Bicester, gave citations from scientific studies in a detailed list which highlighted some of the health hazards for people living near to communications masts.

He referenced a study which suggests those living in close proximity to electromagnetic fields are at increased risk of developing diseases, such as cancers, tumours and genetic damage.

Councillor Chris Pruden said: “It looks like a lot more people are pro-mast than are against it, it’s just the location that’s the issue.

“But this was the optimal location and these 5G towers are nothing like as big as the ones from even 10 years ago.

“I am interested in hearing more people’s opinions and thoughts on it.”
