Huge swathes of grass have been burned away after a devastating field fire threatened to destroy nearby crops.

This afternoon at 3.20pm crews from Bicester Fire Station, Kidlington Fire Station and Banbury Fire Station were called to reports of a field alight near to Weston on the Green, just outside of Bicester.

On arrival crews were faced with a fast-growing fire threatening to spread into nearby fields of standing crop.

Quick actions from the crews – namely the use of hose reel jets - prevented the fire from escalating.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We would like to remind everyone that although the air temperature has dropped the ground and vegetation is still very dry and even a small ember can cause a larger fire.”
