A BICESTER park was alive with music, dancing, singing and laughter on Saturday night with revellers hailing Bicester Town Council’s latest live music event a huge success.

Hundreds of people attended the sell-out Sledgehammer gig, dancing the night away to the sounds of the 1980s.

It was the second time covers band Sledgehammer had performed at the park – they previously took to the Garth Park stage in August 2019 – and once again the band was a huge hit with party-goers.

Tune after tune was belted out including 'Don’t you want me' (Human League), 'Purple Rain' (Prince) and Walking on sunshine (Katrina and the Waves).

Many people had dressed in 1980s style costumes or ‘I love the 80s’ t-shirts to add to the fun of the evening.

The concert was the second music event held in the park this summer, with ABBA tribute band Abba Stars UK wowing residents earlier this month.

Residents took to social media to express how much they enjoyed the night.

Carol Townsend said on Facebook: "Fantastic night, enjoyed every second. Voice is a bit hoarse from all the singing. Just fab."

Laura Hudson commented: "Absolutely amazing night. Three hours of pure fun and fabulous entertainment. Super impressive."

Sharon Nicola said: "Loved the evening, a brilliant night full of pure Sledgehammer entertainment."

Bicester Mayor councillor Nicholas Mawer said: “A big thank you must go to Sledgehammer who were amazing and the town council’s staff for putting in so much effort behind the scenes to stage another fantastic event.

“It was great to see so many people get into the spirit of the evening - dressing up in 1980s fashions, dancing and singing along to songs. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and the weather was perfect.”

Sledgehammer is made up of Russ Fray on vocals, Simon Bays on guitar, Al Grout on bass and Phil Heard on drums. By day they do jobs in medicine, IT and teaching, but at the weekend they pick up their musical instruments and take to the stage as 80s cover band Sledgehammer.

Bicester Town Council also held a Superhero Day event last month where children dressed-up as their favourite superheroes. It was the town's first in-person event in 16 months.
