WE would like to congratulate all those people who are fighting for safer roads in our city.

The area around Cumnor Hill is a prime example of a place where development has continued and the population has grown apace, seemingly without any strategic approach to improving safety.

Thousands of children cross numerous busy roads to get to school every day in this area, and we have now had two serious accidents in recent years.

The exact reasons that those accidents happened is almost irrelevant: if any child were permanently injured or – God forbid – killed in a road traffic accident then it would not have been worth any prevarication over improving safety.

As councillor Judy Roberts said, it seems lucky that no one has been killed or seriously injured already.

During the pandemic, traffic levels plummeted across the country as millions worked from home, but in recent weeks we have already seen the return of traditional Oxford traffic levels.

This is an ideal time to address the issue, and the sooner it is looked at the better.

We hope the county council can help in taking swift action.
