By Banbury MP Victoria Prentis.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, I have received over 14,000 emails from constituents – almost 50 per cent more than in the same period last year.

People have written to me for advice, support and assistance during these difficult times.

Others have wanted to get in touch simply to share their personal thoughts about the ongoing situation and the Government response. Everyone has their own viewpoint, informed by their own personal circumstances.

As the Member of Parliament, I certainly do not claim to have the necessary expertise or evidence to make all the decisions.

Rather, it is for me to ask searching questions and share the concerns of those whom I represent. The recent increase in the infection rate in the Cherwell area has been worrying. While the virus was largely confined to 16 to 25 year olds a few weeks ago, there now seems to be evidence of community transmission, with the spread increasing to the older age groups.

This week that is mainly among those in their 30s and 40s but I worry about the visits which might spread the virus to those of grandparent age.

I know our local health providers have worked hard to plan for the coming months, but the infection rate serves as a reminder that we all have a part to play in our fight against coronavirus.

It is essential that we follow the guidelines and remember how important it is to wash our hands regularly, wear face coverings and make space. We need to consider if any particular trip or visit is a good idea.

We must also though remember the effect on the economy and jobs of further restrictions. Lockdown fatigue and isolation are also very real concerns. The Government has a difficult balancing act between stopping the spread of the virus and preserving the economy. There is a rigorous process in place to assess the situation as it changes. All decisions are made on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer and the Joint Biosecurity Centre.

The mental and physical wellbeing of my constituents remains at the heart of my own approach as I continue to work closely with the Government, local leaders and public health officials going forward. If there is anything I have learnt from our experience with the virus over the past few months, it is that we all need to be more understanding and kind. We know the next few months will be challenging for us all.
