THREE students have been awarded £80,000 each in funding for their research.
The University of Oxford PhD students were awarded the money by Prince Albert’s Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.
Tom Waddell has developed an AI (artificial intelligence) model that uses MRI scans to identify the probabilities of specific symptoms arising in diabetes patient’s organs.

Maral Bayaraa is also using AI to predict dam collapses based on satellite imagery.
Meanwhile, Daniella Cheang has developed a new environmentally friendly method for synthesising molecules used in drug development.
Bernard Taylor, chairman of the Royal Commission, said: “Empowering bright scientists early in their career to do the research they want to pursue while giving companies access to that research is the best way of letting scientific curiosity impact industry.”
