The number of patients in Oxfordshire's hospital with Covid has been revealed.

As of 8am on Tuesday there were 16 patients at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH), with coronavirus.

This is according to data released today by NHS England and is the highest since at least August, which is as far back as its public trust-level records go.

Of these one person was in serious enough condition to need to be on ventilation.

The trust, which runs the John Radcliffe Hospital as well as the Churchill, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Banbury's Horton General Hospital, reported its first Covid death on Monday.

It took the trust's death toll to 183 and was the first new death since July.

The data comes as Oxfordshire was blocked by the Government from entering into Tier 2 restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid.

The decision was taken after the county's public health director Ansaf Azhar applied to Government for heightened restrictions earlier this week.

Across the UK there are currently 6,479 people in hospital with Covid and 347 in the South East.
