Residents of an East Lancashire village have come up with a new way to raise funds for the local church after Covid-19 cancelled three of its family events.

Event organisers in Higham are asking residents to take part in a virtual treasure hunt for a chest containing more than £1,000 that has been buried somewhere in the village, in attempts to make-up for losing the village’s Christmas fair, May fair and scarecrow festival.

Hundreds of people from across Lancashire visit the Pendleside village each year to join in with its festivities, but as with many other planned events in 2020, they had to be called off due to Covid.

Chairman of the Higham events committee, Terry Butterfield said: “These are fabulous events and everyone enjoys mucking in to make them a success.

"It’s so sad how Covid-19 has badly affected so many families and changed people’s plans.

"We had a good think about what we could do to bring a bit of fun to the village and help raise money for our local church and allow people to feel part of something without compromising their health, and an online treasure hunt seemed perfect."
