A DOZEN new coronavirus cases were recorded in Oxford this weekend.

Four cases of Covid-19 positive tests were confirmed in the city on Saturday, with a further eight today.

The Public Health England figures show, as of 9am, the city had 1,116 cases.

A further 32 cases were recorded during the same period across Oxfordshire.

Of these 16 were on Saturday and the same again today taking the county's total to 3,794.

Across the UK, a further 8,331 positive tests were recorded over the weekend - 3,899 in the last 24 hours.

It comes as people in England who refuse an order to self-isolate will face fines of up to £10,000, the Government warned, amid deepening concern at the sharp upsurge in coronavirus infections.

With new cases of the infection doubling every week, Boris Johnson said the measures were necessary to control the spread of the virus and to protect the most vulnerable from becoming infected.

The new regulations will come into force in England on September 28.

Data released on Friday by the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) shows the estimate for R is between 1.1 and 1.4.

The higher R is above one, the faster the epidemic is growing.

A total of 45 people were also announced to have died within 28 days of a positive test on Saturday and Sunday.

It takes the UK's official death toll to 41,777.

Globally, there have now been more than 30.5 million cases confirmed and more than 953,000 deaths.
