WOKINGHAM bosses showed their support for the LGBTQ+ community over the weekend, flying the rainbow flag for gay pride.

The flag was flown in front of the Borough Council offices, Shute End, Wokingham, on Saturday, July 11, to mark the day where Wokingham was originally meant to hold it's first Gay Pride event.

However this has to be moved to a virtual version due to coronavirus.

Instead of holding traditional pride march, residents displayed rainbow flags, shared songs and poems and shared their support over the internet, in a bid to let the town show it's support.

A spokesman for the Wokingham Borough Council said: "Pride usually bursts with marches, parades and festivities, and whilst these are placed on hold due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the council would still like to urge residents to mark the day.

"From displaying flags in windows, writing messages of support and sharing empowering images on social media – there are many creative ways to join the celebrations."

"Our work with our partners to promote equality and good relations is stronger than ever and I’m proud of the inclusive and diverse borough that Wokingham is.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you all to share this experience with us online."
