TWO Kidlington Girl Guides chose an unusual spot to become Ranger guides in January 1990: on top of a firefighters' platform.
Katherine Prince, 15, and Sarah Lowe, 14, had to get used to unusual challenges as part of their year of preparation before they could formally become Ranger guides.
For their 'investiture' they came up with something out of the ordinary – hosting the initiation ceremony atop a fire crew's hydraulic platform.
Oxford's Rewley Road fire station was the venue for the ceremony which took place high above in the platform cage.
During their year of preparation for becoming a Ranger guide the girls, former members of the third and second Kidlington Girl Guide companies, took part in various exercises including map reading and cooking outdoors.
