A POPULAR Indian restaurant which has been serving the people of Kidlington and beyond for almost 40 years has received another top hygiene rating.

The Ovisher was given a score of five stars following an inspection by Cherwell District Council's health team on March 17.

It is the third five star rating in a row for the Oxford Road business.

Sharing a picture of a new sign for the five-star score on the restaurant's Facebook page, a post said: “Eat your food with confidence here at Ovisher.”

It added due to coronavirus lockdown it was now offering takeaway only, either collection or delivery. Ovisher, which means ‘the lovers meeting place’, was opened in 1981.

Its website said: “As one of the oldest Indian restaurants in Oxfordshire, it has been serving the people of Kidlington and Oxford for more than 30 years.

“One of the greatest boasts about the restaurant is that three generations of families have now been enjoying its cuisine.

“Indeed, the food is intended to be special, and the experienced chefs are always studying the customer’s culinary desires in order to produce good, if not the finest, curry.”

On review website TripAdvisor the restaurant has a rating of 4.5 out of five from more than 300 reviews.

It has also continued to please customers during lockdown.

The most recent review, posted last week, said: “Can I just say that we had a lovely takeaway tonight from the Ovisher best we have tasted for a long long time, so friendly on the phone, quick delivery and the food was really lovely. Will definitely use again.”

Another, from when the restaurant was still open for diners, said: “We had friends to treat to a special vegetarian occasion and were delighted that the Ovisher was such a really good experience.

"Welcoming and kind, great service, very friendly, with delicious authentic food and of course - the bottled Cobra beer. Excellent - thank you very much.”

While a further happy diner, described it as the 'best Indian restaurant' they had been to in 'a long time', adding: "Good staff and a warm welcome."

Dishes include Akbari chicken, a fruity mild curry dish cooked with pineapple, mango, banana, pure ghee, cream, almond and coconut powder, as well as 'Ovisher Bahar', described as chicken lamb or prawns marinated in yoghurt with the chef's own recipe and barbecued with onions, tomatoes, green peppers. Then cooked in an Ovisher special sauce.
