FIFTY MPs have backed a campaign for compensation for families of front-line coronavirus victims.
A petition launched last week by Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran called for an ‘army-style’ compensation scheme for the families of medical staff who die from the virus.
Three doctors have already died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
And hundreds more are reportedly fearful of returning to work due to the risk to their lives.
Lib Dem MP Ms Moran has welcomed the backing for her campaign, saying the scheme would ‘provide security and comfort for those risking their lives.’
Since the petition was set up last Thursday, 50 cross-party MPs and over 1,150 members of the public have backed Layla Moran MP’s campaign for the Coronavirus Compensation Scheme
The MPs have also written a letter to the prime minister, which states that ‘those on the frontline of this battle against coronavirus are heroes,’ before advocating for a scheme comparable to the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
Three UK doctors have already lost their lives to the virus.
They were Derby-based consultant Amged el-Hawrani, London surgeon Adel el-Tayar, and Essex GP Habib Zaidi.

The backers of the Coronavirus Compensation Scheme have said it should be open to the families of those classified as key workers, notably NHS and social care staff as well as teachers.
Layla Moran MP said: “Our gratitude to all those on the frontline, who are working to save and help others, is limitless. They are putting their lives on the line and they should know that, should the worst happen, the state will help their families.
“That’s why, while no money could ever compensate for any loss of life, setting up a Coronavirus Compensation Scheme would provide security and comfort for those risking their lives.
“I’d like to thank the 50 cross-party MPs and 1150 members of the public who’ve supported the campaign so far. It’s time for the Government to take notice and introduce this compassionate Compensation Scheme without delay.”
