This is further supported by triage appointments carried out by phone where possible and only one customer is permitted in the store at any time.

Specsavers Bicester store director, Satnam Johal, said: "Guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of our customers and our colleagues has to be our priority so we will only open if it is safe to do so and in compliance with the government ’s strict new guidelines.

"We’re keen to do our bit for the wider community where we can. Specsavers’ teams are classed as key workers to provide urgent and essential eye care to those who need it.

"This includes supporting other key workers who couldn’t function without our help and people who would come to harm without our health expertise."

Customers can phone the store for advice and to be assessed on the level of care that they might need, the only exception being key workers who are able to walk in and seek immediate advice.

Glasses and contact lenses can also be purchased online for customers with a current prescription.
