ASDA shoppers in Wheatley have helped to raise £1,000 for an Oxford hospice.

The supermarket's Green Token Scheme allows customers to drop a green coin in one of three boxes, representing a different charity.

At the end of each year, tokens are collected and Asda donates £500 to the most popular cause, and £250 for the runners-up.

For the 2019 token scheme, however, the donations were all doubled to celebrate the Asda Foundation's 30th birthday.

Sobell House Hospice was the recipient of the £1,000 while Oxford Baby Bank and the Health Development Trust received £500.

They have now been handed their cheques by Asda Community champion Linda Blackmore.

She said: "We are really proud to be able to continually support the local charity groups in our area.

"At Asda, we're always thrilled when customers' chosen good causes benefit from these vital funding boosts and we get to raise awareness of what they do.

"It's great to see three groups who are right on our doorstep benefit from the £2,000 donation."

Tim Wraith, corporate partnerships manager at Sobell House in Headington, accepted the cheque along with Marian Organ and her 11-year-old daughter Katie, who suggested putting forward the nomination.

Mr Wraith said: "The entire team at Sobell House would like to thank Asda Wheatley for this incredibly fantastic donation.

"The £1,000 from the Asda Foundation is greatly appreciated and will be a huge help to us."
