A SCHOOL has held a week of fundraising in honour of a pupil who grew up with leukaemia.

John Mason School in Abingdon has collected more than £2,400 of donations for Cancer Research, after running an entire week of Race For Life events.

More than 900 pupils at the secondary school raced for five kilometres around the field, with different year groups taking part each day.

The driving force behind their efforts was teacher Natalie Uzzell and pupil Ace Manthey.

Ace was diagnosed with leukaemia 12 years ago, and battled the condition for three years before being given the all-clear in 2011.

He and his sister Sky have appeared in the Oxford Mail several times over the years, raising money for charities close to their hearts.

Now 15, the teenager is still working to help others in the fight against cancer.

Pupils who took part in the Race For Life runs were able to wear signs on their back, with the name of someone they know who has been affected by cancer.

Headteacher Sarah Brinkley, tweeting yesterday, said it had been an 'amazing week'.

Cancer Research holds its own Race For Life events, but schools, businesses and other groups can also set up their own using resources on the charity's website.

Donations are usually raised by people paying a small fee to take part.

The annual run in Oxford will return to University Parks on Sunday, July 12.

Hundreds of people are expected to take part and registration is now open via raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org.

Tickets cost £14.999 for adults and young adults, £10 for children, and all children aged six or under can take part for free.
