A CHINESE university will not have new students from the country arriving at its Oxfordshire campus this week but confirmed a group are coming to the UK.

Professor Guy Liu, speaking on behalf of Peking University HSBC Business School, which opened a campus at Boars Hill last year, said steps would be taken to manage the risk from coronavirus.

He would not reveal exactly when these students would be arriving or where they would go initially, saying: “Student arrival time and where to stay is their private information and we cannot release it."

Two staff members had confirmed to the paper that students were coming this week and steps would be taken to keep any risk from coronavirus to a ‘manageable scale’.

Professor Liu said the number of new students was ‘small’ and that the university had closely checked the UK government website to plan for the visit.

He added no current or planned students were from Wuhan or the Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak of the deadly disease, which has killed more than 1,000 people and has nine confirmed cases in the UK.

The professor said: “Students will board the plane by passing through port-of-exit screening in the airport when they leave China, and anyone that fails the screening will not be allowed to board.

"We do have a good plan to look after our visiting students for the first two weeks after their arrival, and the students are planned to avoid going to the city or public places during the period.

"Our plan has been consulted with related parties including the accommodation management.”

He added the university was the 'same as any other' in the UK in looking after its students from China.
