A JET-SETTING Oxford DJ with a ‘heart of gold’ will spin discs for the stars as he heads to Hollywood again.

Gary Smith from Bicester, who goes by the stage name DJG, has been invited back to play during Oscar season at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the third year.

He will be DJ-ing in February at the ECOLUXE Lounge Oscars pre-gifting suite in Los Angeles, and will be bringing along his wife Yvonne and son Darius.

Mr Smith grew up in Cowley and his mum Ma Smith is a local celebrity for her role founding the Oxford Community Soup Kitchen.

He said: “Music has the great power to transform lives and to help make people happy.

“I take the responsibility of my job very seriously, the job to make people happy.”

Mr Smith plays soulful house and is also a producer and radio presenter, with his own show every Friday on BBC Radio Oxford.

He is also a tutor for children with autism and special needs, helping them to access the power of music.

As well as the Oscars, he has performed at other glitzy events including the Golden Globes, Monaco Grand Prix and Monaco Yacht Show.

Mrs Smith, a hairdresser, joins him on his trips as his videographer, while their blogger son dances, edits videos and manages his social media presence.

The family share updates about their adventures using the hash tags #TeamDJG121 and #ItsAGodTing, and Mr Smith said they all have a part to play when he is performing.

During previous trips to LA, they have met Oscar nominees and winners from films including The Greatest Showman, Black Panther and Green Book, and they hope to meet more this year.

The ECOLUXE Lounge is an event created by sustainable creative producer, Debbie Durkin of Durkin Entertainment.

She said: “We loved having DJG and his family provide beautiful music at our exclusive, behind-the-scenes, by-producer-invite-only ECOLUXE celebrity hospitality and media charity lounges.

“DJG is a true artist with a heart-of gold who has his finger on the pulse of what’s trending to make our event pop!

“His wonderful wife and uber-talented fashion influencer and dancer son add to the festive atmosphere that our VIP discerning guests and crew love.”

She said the lounges honour the entertainment industry’s finest television and film stars, world-class athletes, musicians, influencers and media outlets.

2020 marks the 92nd Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars.

The award ceremony itself will take place on Sunday, February 9, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Nominations have not yet been revealed but an announcement is expected on Monday to see which films, actors and industry creatives are in with a chance of winning.

Despite mingling with more A-listers, Mr Smith has not forgotten his Oxford roots.

He has become a regular fixture at the Cowley Road Carnival in recent years, and helped his son to stage a flash mob at the Westgate Centre in Oxford in November, to raise awareness about the Oxfordshire Youth Awards taking place in May.

They also kept runners motivated with a set at the Oxford Half Marathon in October.

Last summer the father-and-son duo also brought joy to shoppers in Oxford with a DJ set, dancing and free hugs in Bonn Square.

Mr Smith said his family is 'integral' to all that he does, and they will be keeping people updated on their travels across the pond next month via social media.
