A MAN who went on trial accused of having a phone in prison has been given more time behind bars.

Kevin Mcateer had denied two counts alleging the possession of a mobile phone and SIM card without lawful authority at HMP Bullingdon.

Prosecutors at his trial at Oxford Crown Court said that the 28-year-old had the mobile phone and was found to have logged a known contact number which he had pre-authorised with the prison.

During the trial the court heard that officers went to his cell on October 22 last year at about 10.45pm.

They found Mcateer inside his prison cell D2/11 where he 'threw' a mobile phone out of his cell.

He was the only occupant of that cell and the device landed outside of the cell confines.

Despite denying the two counts jurors found him guilty by a unanimous verdict on Thursday after three hours and 46 minutes of deliberations.

After the verdicts presiding Judge Nigel Daly proceeded straight to sentencing.

Mcateer - who is already a serving prisoner - was given eight months in prison to run consecutive to his current jail term.

He must also pay a victim surcharge of £140.
