SANTA-loving Oxford has been named 'the most Christmassy town in Britain' when it comes to fairy lights (despite the fact it is a city).

Each house in the university city has an average array of more than 350 festive lights, compared to the national average of 131, according to a new study.

Meanwhile people in Birmingham are the Grinches of the UK, with a measly average of 71 lights.

Research for moneyexpert.com also found that people from Oxford had 'the most baubles on their tree',  81, compared to a national average of 61, while those in Edinburgh have just 45.

The total number of baubles on Britain’s trees is likely to be 1.7billion, the researchers have said - enough to stretch more than four times around the globe if they were laid end to end.

The festive light displays are likely to cost households a total of £222m extra on electricity bills over the Christmas period, the staff at moneyexpert said.

"With over half of Brits having never switched their energy supplier and many paying more than they should for their gas and electricity bills, the Christmas switch-on is a good moment in time to remind people to shop around and search for better deals."
