EMERGENCY services are attending a "serious crash" in a busy road.

One witness described traffic at a standstill after the incident on the A270 Lewes Road earlier this evening.

He said: "I saw about three or four buses with their hazard lights on, and then there were a few police cars with their lights on too.

"The traffic was at a standstill."

Another passerby said:"At about 5.40pm there were three police cars and a couple of ambulances down there.

"It must have been a serious crash.

"I couldn't see any damaged cars around but police seemed to be interviewing people."

Sussex Police attended the incident.

A spokesman said: “We have been in attendance at a road traffic collision in Lewes Road.

“We were called at 5.14pm.

“We are still dealing with the incident so cannot provide further details at this time.”

An AA spokesman said: "The road is blocked and there is queueing traffic due to a crash on the A270 Lewes Road southbound.

"It is blocked from The Highway to Natal Road and there is congestion stretching back to the A27 at Stanmer Park.

"There are delays of nine minutes in Lewes Road westbound in Bevendean with an average speed of 5mph."
