MORE than a dozen Oxfordshire schools have ranked among the best in the UK after recording stellar results.

High-achieving schools were named on Sunday in the Parent Power Sunday Times Schools Guide 2020, which recommends 2,000 schools across the UK based on exam performance.

In the private sector, Magdalen College School in Oxford was listed third in the South East, while Oxford High School in Summertown came 10th.

The former said it was ‘delighted’ to be included in the guide, which put it at position number six in the whole country.

Oxford High, in Summertown, came 29th in the UK.

The secondary school league tables factor in the percentage of examination entries gaining A* to B grades at A-level this summer, and the percentage of entries returning A* and A grades, and those graded 9, 8 and 7, at GCSE and iGCSE.

At Magdalen College School, 96.1 per cent achieved A*-B at A-level, as did 92.7 per cent of pupils at Oxford High.

St Helen and St Katharine in Abingdon placed at 41 while neighbouring Abingdon School placed at 44.

Headington School came in at 87 while d’Overbroeck’s and St Edward’s School, all in Oxford, also placed in the top 150.

Tudor Hall School in Banbury, Kingham Hill School in West Oxfordshire, Rye St Antony School in Headington and Oxford Sixth Form College also made the list.

The guide also published the 500 best-performing state secondary schools in the UK, with several Oxfordshire schools celebrated.

The Cherwell School in Oxford was at 213, Matthew Arnold School in Botley at 255, Cheney School in Headington at 370, Burford School at 397 and Chipping Norton School at 409.

At primary and prep school level, Windrush Valley School near Chipping Norton placed 51st in the UK, while St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Headington made the list at 398 for the state sector.

The rankings were based on SATs results in reading, grammar and mathematics.

Amanda Douglas, headteacher at Windrush Valley, said: “I am immensely proud of the pupils and staff for their efforts in achieving this success.

“We do not specifically prepare pupils for SATs test, instead we provide a well-balanced and broad curriculum to delivery academic and behavioural excellence.

“Our commitment to small class sizes, which currently average 10 pupils per class, enables us to provide children with individual attention on a regular basis.”

St Mary’s School in Ascot was named The Sunday Times' independent secondary school of the year for the South East.

Alastair McCall, editor of Parent Power, said: “This relatively small all-girls Catholic boarding school rarely has to advertise its merits, such is the distinctiveness of the education it provides in a crowded marketplace.

"Its results put many 'big name' independent schools in the region firmly into the shade and represent an outstanding achievement by the girls and their teachers."

This year's was the 27th edition of Parent Power, and the full tables are available to Times and Sunday Times subscribers via thesundaytimes.co.uk/parentpower.
