A PATH used by pedestrians and cyclists in Oxford is closed this morning due to a burst water main.

Thames Water engineers are on site at Barracks Lane, which is shut between Kenilworth Avenue and Bartlemas Close.

The path borders Lincoln College Recreation Ground, and is a well-used shortcut.

A Thames Water spokesman said: "We’re sorry to anyone affected by a burst on a 12-inch diameter pipe.

"Our engineers were quickly on the scene and we hope to complete the repair later today.

"In the meantime the footpath will be closed to ensure the safety of both our engineers and the public."

He said although the pipe is a main, there should be no impact for customers' water supply.

Commenting on this article, one Oxford Mail reader said Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service also dealt with the leak after water seeped into homes in nearby Belvedere Road.

The reader added: "Hats off to the Oxfordshire fire service for attending the scene and tackling the issue appropriately and professionally. A massive thank you to them."

Thames Water said its team is not aware of any flooding to properties, although the water did flow to a back garden.
