A SUPERMARKET was found to have dead, rotting rats under shelving and a 'significant amount' of droppings, it is claimed.

Irfan Tai and Rizwan Tai, both of Bath Road, Banbury, are each charged with six counts alleging contravention of EU provision concerning food safety and hygiene.

The charges are all alleged to have taken place on August 15 last year at Tai Oriental Supermarket, Parson Street, Banbury.

It is alleged that at the supermarket there was a failure to have pest control treatment and that a 'significant amount of rat droppings were found underneath shelving'.

It is also claimed that the remains of 'decomposing adult rats' were found underneath shelving and an under stairs cupboard.

The charges further allege that there was no system in place for regular cleaning and that staff were not properly trained or supervised.

The case was set to be heard for its first listing at Oxford Magistrates' Court today.

No plea has yet been entered to any of the six charges.

*UPDATE: Neither defendant attended the hearing today and the case was adjourned until November 25.
