A MAN stumbled out of a house into the street with a knife lodged in his stomach after a row with a flat mate over a DVD and a dog.

‘Dangerous’ offender Terry Thomas had had a tempestuous relationship with his flat mate and eventual victim in the run up to explosion of violence on August 10 this year.

A court heard yesterday how the borrowing of a DVD had been ‘the trigger’ for the knife attack as well as an earlier argument over the keeping of a dog at the house they shared on Rivermead Road, Oxford.

The 32-year-old - who has a history of violent offending - had already admitted one count of wounding with intent.

Oxford Crown Court heard at his sentencing hearing yesterday how during the attack Thomas got his victim ‘in a headlock’ before going on to punch him in the face repeatedly.

Not content to stop there Thomas then went into a kitchen and retrieved a knife which he then used to launch a stabbing attack.

He stabbed his victim ‘in an under arm motion’ in the stomach which became lodged and the man then left the house with the knife still inside him.

Thomas then dialled 999 and the victim was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital where he remained for more than a week while he was treated.

The court went on to hear at yesterday’s hearing of a number of previous convictions for Thomas including another matter of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was also subject to licence provisions at the time of his latest offending.

In mitigation yesterday Dr Robert Lindsey said his client’s ‘best mitigation’ was his guilty plea to the offence.

He added: “He made prompt admissions to the police and he phoned 999 for an ambulance for the victim.

“He acknowledges the seriousness of what he has done.”

Dr Lindsey said the two men had been sharing a flat together for two years which he said was ‘for the most part it was a good relationship’ but added that turned sour and tensions began to grow over money.

Thomas described himself as a ‘pressure cooker over time’ and said there was an incident involving keeping dogs at the house after the landlord asked for one to be removed.

The court heard Thomas’s dog was removed without warning by his flat mate and then events were ‘triggered’ with the borrowing of a DVD before the the fateful attack.

Sentencing, Judge Nigel Daly said: “You deliberately stabbed your victim with a kitchen knife after an argument over property and possibly a dog.

“You stabbed him in the upper abdomen and [he was] also found to have a wound in the back.”

Thomas was jailed for six years and will be made subject to an extended period on licence for four years, as well as paying a victim surcharge.
