WANTAGE MP Ed Vaizey is still a government trade envoy despite having the Conservative whip removed.

The rebel MP is due to travel to southeast Asia next week in his official capacity as trade envoy to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

He told The Times that he was 'looking forward' to the visit.

Mr Vaizey was one of 21 Conservatives who lost the whip earlier this month after voting in favour of blocking a no-deal Brexit.

Despite this, which means he now sits as an independent, he has not been sacked from his unpaid government job by Boris Johnson.

He was appointed to the role by former Prime Minister Theresa May in September 2017.

There are 25 trade envoys from a range of parties who are tasked with facilitating trade and investment with emerging countries across the world.
