OXFORD'S Extinction Rebellion group said it will challenge the county council's 'poor' climate change record on Saturday.

The group said its own Town Crier will stand outside County Hall, in New Road, just before midday to highlight what it said has been inadequate action by the council.

Hazel Dawe, a member of the group, said: "We will read out the Declaration of Rebellion outside County Hall in Oxford at 11:58am on Saturday, just under a month before the country wide Extinction Rebellion October 2019 Uprising.

"Oxford Extinction Rebellion have chosen to read the Declaration outside County Hall because we feel that the county council has taken little action on the climate emergency."

She said: β€œIn the same April 2 meeting that the county council acknowledged a climate emergency they refused to oppose the Oxford-Cambridge expressway: a major new road that will increase traffic and increase emissions."

She added: "We need action and we need it now.

"We need the county council to oppose the expressway and to stop pushing for ever more unsustainable and climate changing growth in Oxfordshire.”

In July, members of Extinction Rebellion held a protest in front of Barclays Bank in Cornmarket Street.

They said they held the event there because the bank 'continues to be the number one villain on the UK banking scene in terms of fossil fuel investments.'

In April, more than 1,100 people were arrested in London as part of 10 days of protests held by Extinction Rebellion.

As part of that, protesters blocked roads, climbed on a train and glued themselves together in an attempt to highlight climate change.

Much of the action was centred on the City of London, where many polluting companies are based.
