OXFORD could be a host city for a crucial conference on the climate crisis next year.

Tom Hayes, the City Council’s Cabinet Member for Zero Carbon Oxford, has asked the government to consider Oxford as a venue for the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the UN framework convention on climate change, which is widely expected to be held in the UK.

In a letter to Claire Perry MP, the former energy minister made ‘President of COP26’, Mr Hayes requests that ‘key sections of it might place in Oxford—one of the world’s best-known locations and one of the country’s leading and most sustainable cities.’

The Labour councillor continued: “With a record for hosting crucial events, Oxford would be the right choice to showcase the UK’s commitment to rapid emissions reductions. Oxford stands ready to join Glasgow in backing efforts to tackle our climate emergency."

Referencing Oxford's various 'high standard' venues and its record of hosting events, Mr Hayes highlighted various green initiatives including Oxford's proposed Zero Emission Zone, which is due to be phased in in the same year that the summit takes place.

The cabinet office did not answer whether Oxford could help host the summit, but stated: "If successful, there will be events planned across the UK as part of a 'Four Nations' UKCOP."
