DRIVERS faced 'total gridlock' in Oxford on their commute home this evening, with problems partly closed by a lane closure on the A40.
Part of the road was closed earlier this afternoon after a lorry overturned, on the stretch between Headington and Cutteslowe roundabouts.
Oxfordshire County Council said the road had reopened by 5.30pm, but warned of 'heavy congestion' in the Headington area and 'residual delays.’
The #A40 between #Headington roundabout and #Cutteslowe Roundabout has now re-opened following the earlier incident. Please expect residual delays on all approaches. Still avoid Headington due to heavy congestion, especially around Headley Way #OxonTravel pic.twitter.com/nRBSub7pc0

Tony Brett, who works in Oxford University's Medical Sciences Division, said there was 'total gridlock' around the hospital sites in Headington and 'nothing was moving at all' as of 5pm.
Maybe don't try to drive in and around Headington or @OUHospitals John Radcliffe right now? It's total gridlock! It's rare I see a solid jam out of my office window opposite the industrial block. Nothing moving at all. @TheOxfordMail @BBCOxford pic.twitter.com/TYXoKzQUVc
