SMOKE from burning waste filled the skies above West Oxford yesterday evening.

Firefighters were called to Binsey Lane to tackle the blaze at 6pm.

Two engines from the Rewley Road station attended and found building materials, wooden pallets, garden waste and general rubbish on fire and sending 'large amounts' of 'thick smoke' across the local area.

Crews used two high pressure hose reels to extinguish the fire and remained on scene for around two and a half hours to make sure any remaining hot spots were safe.

Oxford Mail:

Crew manager Adam Summers said: “I would like to remind everyone to be aware when lighting bonfires or storing large amounts of waste products, to have a water supply or hose nearby, also to only burn small amounts at a time in a controlled manner.

“Due to the quick actions of the first attending fire crews we were able to stop the fire spreading to nearby grassland and a neighbouring storage yard."

He added: “These types of bonfires can easily get out of control and cause severe damage to the countryside or other property, therefore please be careful if you have any bonfires and make sure that you stay with it at all times”.

The fire service said it is not investigating the blaze.
