HUNDREDS of walkers, joggers and runners laced up their trainers and put on their brightest Lycra for the first Light the Night in Bicester.

The fundraising event, staged by Sobell House hospice in Oxford, attracted more than 500 people on Saturday.

Competitors took the 5K route around Bicester Heritage under the cover of darkness, all to support the hospice.

Sobell House events manager Cara Waller said: "We are delighted to have over 500 people come to our first Light the Night.

"The people of Bicester gave it a real community feel and they made such a great effort to dress up.

"We really appreciate their effort in aid of Sobell House."

The event pulled in people in tutus, wigs and bright colours and others decoratively dressed in fairy lights.

There was also entertainment on hand including music along the way, glow sticks, neon zones and a fire performer.

The event was staged by Sobell House in partnership with Run Together which is the umbrella to a host of running groups up and down the country.

The Bicester group is led by Michaela Waddup, a fitness coach who is also promoting a couple of options for Bicester runners – Run Together Bicester ‘Jog Squad’ for beginners, or the ‘Bicester Striders’ for the more established runners, able to run 5K fairly comfortably.

The group were there on Saturday to help runners along and take on the 5K themselves.

The funds raised at Light the Night Bicester will help support specialist nurses care for patients with life-limiting conditions.
