POLICE were on patrol around Oxford Central Mosque today as part of a commitment to step up visibility and security at the city’s places of worship.
Thames Valley Police has assigned officers to help reassure worshipers following an attack at two mosques in New Zealand earlier this month.
Oxford’s Muslim community had called on the police to do more to help them feel safer following the attack in Christchurch where 50 people were killed and dozens injured.

Today Thames Valley Police tweeted a message to show PCSOs outside the Oxford Central Mosque in Manzil Way.

Since the attack in New Zealand a number of hate crime incidents have been reported in Oxford.
Swastikas and an apparent reference to the New Zealand shooting were spray painted on walls at the Cheney School, while just days later a woman walking through Oxford wearing a hijab said a man made shooting sounds at her from his van.
