A SECTION of the A34 has been revealed as Oxfordshire's most congested route.

Transport company Inrix found the A-road between the A420 at the Botley Interchange and junction 9 of the M40 is the county's busiest traffic corridor in its 2018 Global Traffic Scorecard.

Second on the list was the A40 between Cutteslowe and Eynsham, while third was Oxford's Eastern Bypass between the Green Road Roundabout and Rose Hill.

Oxford was not among the top 10 worst UK cities for congestion, which cost the UK economy an estimated £8bn last year.

London topped the list, with motorists spending an average of 227 hours stuck in traffic in 2018.

The capital is the sixth most gridlocked city in the world, with the A406 from Chiswick Roundabout to Hanger Lane, west London, the UK's busiest.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: "Last year UK drivers told us that they are actually becoming more, not less reliant on using their cars - with struggling public transport cited as one of the reasons."

Inrix defines congestion as the demand for road space exceeding supply, but it added some busy routes also suffered from ‘facility breakdown’.

This occurs when a road cannot effectively hold more vehicles, causing a decrease in the roadway’s overall capacity as more vehicles try to force their way onto the roads.
