A QUIRKY plan to turn former men's toilets in St Giles' into bed and breakfast accommodation has been resubmitted.

The owners of a city hotel want to reopen the toilets to give tourists the 'unique' opportunity of staying there.

Architects said it would have a 'neutral impact' on the area, while it would 'add quality and choice to the short let accommodation market'.

The toilets stand just metres away from the Grade II* listed Martyrs' Memorial and Grade I listed Ashmolean Museum.

A similar project was submitted last August by the owners of the Galaxie Hotel, in Banbury Road, but was withdrawn in October. They also run Henry's, in St Michael's Street.

A major change in the new application sees different glass proposed for canopies covering the steps down into the toilets – from opaque, patterned glass to blank, clear glass.

Historic England said that would be better than the previous proposal.

Designers said the glass would be 'exquisitely designed' and that it hopes it would 'become lost in the background of the streetscape'.

Documents note Oxford Civic Society and Oxford Preservation Trust have previously objected to parts of the plan.

Previous planning permission has been granted to use the former toilets as offices.
