OXFORD United's miserable season hit a new low yesterday after a lewd video of winger Gavin Whyte appeared online and supporters called for answers following another winding-up petition.

Supporters' trust OxVox has said it is ‘shocked and disappointed’ after the U's were hit with the measure from HM Revenue & Customs for an overdue tax bill.

It is the third time the U’s have been hit with a winding-up petition since Sumrith ‘Tiger’ Thanakarnjanasuth’s takeover 11 months ago.

News of the petition, which was issued on Friday, broke hours after a video showing Mr Whyte exposing himself in the street was leaked.

The Northern Ireland international was warned of his future conduct by the club following the film from the weekend, while the Police Service of Northern Ireland said they are 'conducting enquiries into the matter'.

The timing could barely be worse for United, with the club chasing new signings in the January transfer window to help them climb out of the League One relegation zone.

It is also days before the U’s toughest test of the season, with table-toppers Portsmouth visiting the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

The measure is expected to be settled within the next 24 hours, but follows reassurances from Tiger of ‘no more HMRC issues’ after the previous petition was settled last month.

In a statement to members, the trust wrote: “While OxVox have been in discussions with the club for the last week over cashflow and their plans to move the club forward, we are shocked and disappointed to learn that the club have once again allowed us to fall behind with HMRC payments.

“Assurances had been made and have just as quickly been broken and we can promise members and supporters that we will continue to challenge the club on this matter until we can confirm that these payments are made.

“It is time for the club to be honest and open about the situation we find ourselves in. We need the owners to put supporters minds at ease by detailing how they plan to alleviate the current cashflow situation and give us their detailed plans and timeframe of how they intend to move the club forward.”

A hearing for the latest petition is scheduled for February 27. The club have declined to comment.
