TWO men escaped from a serious house fire in Bicester early today.

Six fire crews were called to the town's Evenlode Close, after receiving reports of the blaze at 2.20am.

Crews found a severe fire in a terraced house, in a block of six houses.

The blaze affected all floors and the roof, with two men escaping from the property just before firefighters arrived.

They were both treated at the scene by paramedics. One man was taken to hospital for shock and smoke inhalation.

Incident commander Steve Harrison said: "The fire was contained to the property by the swift action of the crews attending.

"Crews are carrying out substantial salvage work to protect the adjacent properties, and to carry out a fire investigation into the morning.

"It is not known at this time if the property was fitted with smoke detectors, although they would have given early warning to the occupants."

Mr Harrison said the two men were "extremely lucky" to escape, a reminder of the importance of having working smoke detectors and a planned escape route.
