George Lane, Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8

Guide price

  • Bedrooms: 2
A charming 16th century Grade II listed cottage providing surprisingly light and airy accommodation, within walking distance of Marlborough's historic High Street.

The location

Originally named Love Lane, George Lane was renamed after The George Inn which stood on the site opposite the cottage now occupied by the Catholic Church. Local legend says that when Oliver Cromwell stayed at the George Inn, the blacksmith opposite refused to shoe his horse, After 1653 an Act of Parliament prohibited thatched buildings in Marlborough, these cottages were allowed to retain their thatch as they were located just outside the centre. The cottages are believed to date from 1580 and retain much original character from that time.
