SIR, The news that Bicester’s park-and-ride service has got the green light is very welcome, of course.

People who work in Oxford may well find it particularly beneficial.

However, news that this service for the people of Bicester is to be shared with visitors to Bicester Village is a matter of concern for shoppers and people wanting to visit Oxford for other reasons.

If the site operates on a first-come, first-served basis, Bicester folk wanting to park there and catch the bus into Oxford at say 10.30am are likely to find the place already overflowing with Bicester Village traffic.

But how else could it operate?

It is hard to distinguish between a car bringing people to Bicester Village and a car whose occupants are headed for Oxford.

Even if some attempt were made to separate them into two car parks, I have no doubt cunning Bicester Village visitors would find a way of taking over Bicester’s allotted share (just as they do in the existing Tesco car park at Pingle Drive).

So I would be interested to hear how this problem is to be overcome.

I am also concerned at the traffic problems that are going to be created along the A41 between Bicester and Junction 9.

Much has been made of the promised road improvements there, but I fear these will be short-lived. Twenty-eight new shops, plus extra parking at Bicester Village, will mean no reduction in traffic flow into and out of Pingle Drive and will add significantly to traffic on the A41.

At the same time, the new junction serving Tesco will add considerably to congestion on this major artery. Add to this the steady growth of traffic from all the promised growth of population and employment and … all I can say is it’s a good job the train service to Oxford is going to improve.
