SIR, I would like to reply to the reader’s letter regarding no hand rails in the new Vue cinema in Bicester.

I use the Cineworld cinema in Milton Keynes at least once a week and I know that the reason for the steps being so steep is to allow viewers a clear view of the screen.

I can still remember the old days of going to the pictures, and having a tall or large person sit in front of you obliterating the view of the screen.

Gone are those experiances because now cinemas are built in a way to allow an uninterrupted view.

This does mean, however, that the steps will be steep and I agree that using them can cause problems for those who are less agile.

However, in Cineworld cinemas, the seats also have higher backs to them, and I use them to steady myself going down the steps, as do many other elderly people.

On the possibility of hand rails and there being a safety hazard – I am a season ticket holder at Brighton, and the Amex Stadium has a small rail at the end of each row of seats in the upper sections of the stands to give support for people going up and down very steep steps.

They are not intrusive on the seats next to them. They must have been deemed safe when it comes to an exit of the stadium in an emergency.

This is a possibility for the owners of the cinema to consider.
