Assaulted police constable dies
A police constable left with critical injuries after being assaulted while off duty has died in hospital.
The officer, who has not been named, suffered a serious head injury after becoming involved in a row during a night out in Wolverhampton city centre in the early hours of Monday January 28.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said the 33-year-old Pc, understood to be based in the Sandwell area, died in hospital on Thursday night.
The constable was punched as he walked past the Divine Bar in Darlington Street after becoming involved in an argument with a black man and two white women who were leaving the nightclub.
The officer, who was left unconscious in the street, is believed to have been attacked at around 4.30am. A post-mortem examination has yet to be carried out to determine the cause of the officer's death.
Detective Inspector Phil Asquith said the scuffle occurred moments after three people left the Divine Bar.
Mr Asquith said: "I'd appeal for anyone who was in the club that night and may have seen them to contact police.
"Similarly I'm keen to hear from anyone who was driving along Darlington Street in the early hours of that morning, heading home after a night out, as they may have witnessed it.
"At the time they may have written it off as a low-level disorder but it's a very serious assault. If anyone has any information that could assist the inquiry, who's possibly heard someone since talking about the incident, I'd ask them to call us on the 101 number as their information could prove vital."
An 18-year-old man and two women have been arrested by police and bailed until a date next month pending further inquiries.
