MATT Williams admits it is a tall order for Chinnor to reach the play-offs but it will not stop his side from making a last-ditch attempt.

The Thame-based club sit third in National League 2 South ahead of this weekend’s final round.

With Bishop’s Stortford confirmed as champions, Chinnor’s promotion hopes rest on claiming second place and setting up a play-off with National League 2 North runners-up Sale.

Despite being level on points with Old Elthamians, Williams’s side trail due to having recorded fewer victories.

Chinnor now need to earn a bonus-point win at lowly London Irish Wild Geese, while their play-off rivals must slip up at home to Barnstaple, another team in the bottom half of the table

Director of rugby Williams accepts it will be a tough ask, but stresses his side must make sure they keep their side of the bargain.

He said: “It will be very difficult (to finish second).

“We still need to go and get five points, because the most gut-wrenching thing would be if we slip up and so do Old Elthamians.

“We’ve still got to go and do our job, but it’s a tall ask for OE’s to mess up from this position.”

Chinnor make five changes from the side that beat Taunton Titans.

Winger Henry Lamont, fly half Basil Strang, prop Joe Hutchinson, flanker Ben Pienaar and No 8 Ali Bone come in to the side.

Williams added: “We’ve got to rally together.

“There’s still one game to go, we’ve got to keep the pressure.”

Henley Hawks host Redruth knowing a win would secure a top-half finish if Canterbury lose to Cinderford.

Marcus Lowe replaces Rob Bell in the back row.
