BANBURY head coach James Kerr revelled in the phenomenal feeling of celebrating a second successive county triumph.

Tries from Josh Deegan and Jack Briggs helped Bulls beat Oxford University Greyhounds 17-12 in the Oxfordshire Cup final at Iffley Road.

It was a scintillating cup final, with both sides refusing to let their guard slip, resulting in an enthralling conclusion which included seven minutes of added time.

Banbury were joined by their supporters on the pitch to celebrate the South West 1 East club’s first back-to-back county success after ending a 16-year barren run 12 months ago.

Head coach Kerr said: “These boys are now in the history books of Banbury Rugby Club.

“These boys will be in that club in 50 years time telling the youngsters how they won the county cup twice on the bounce.

“I’m an alien to this world – I’m a Welshman in an English town, but I can grasp how much it means and it’s phenomenal.”

Kerr added: “It just means so much to the players, their families and the community, and I think that is what gave them that extra bite to last out that 80 minutes.

“It would have been quite easy for us to go into our shells and let that young, fit side spread the ball even wider and you could see they still wanted to play until the last second.

“We did exceptionally well to probably play some of our best rugby in the last ten, it was fantastic for the boys.”

Banbury centre Matt Goode was awarded the Ron Grimshaw Memorial Trophy for his strong ball-carrying and aggressiveness in the tackle.

The 33-year-old said: “I’m probably a good ten years older than the Oxford boys and I thought I’d better stand up and be counted.

“I said to the boys ‘one of us is going to win it, so take it off me because I’m going to play my best and if you can play better than that we’ll be up there', and we won.”
