BASIL Strang starred as Chinnor returned to the top of the table with a 16-10 victory over Redingensians at Kingsey Road.

The fly half scored all the points as Matt Williams’s side took advantage of National League 2 South promotion rivals Bishop’s Stortford and Old Elthamians having games postponed.

With the pitch passing inspection an hour before kick-off, two Strang penalties saw the hosts open up a 6-0 lead after 18 minutes on a bitterly cold day.

Sam Guttridge replied with a penalty, but missed another attempt to draw the visitors level.

Chinnor made them pay for that miss as they stole a line-out, before Strang broke clear to score an individual try under the posts.

The Oxford University Oxford University half back added the extras to make it 13-3 at the break.

Chinnor thought they had added to their lead at the start of the second half, but Luke Hibberd’s try was disallowed for a forward pass.

The hosts were dominating and another Strang penalty stretched their advantage to 13 points.

Both sides began to struggle as the conditions deteriorated, while Chinnor prop Jay Tyack was sin-binned.

Redingensians took advantage of the extra man, when Jak Rossiter collected Ollie Foxley’s kick to score.

Guttridge converted to make it 16-10.

Chinnor were forced to dig deep in the final 15 minutes, with CJ Osazuwa making a try-saving tackle to deny Foxley, as they secured victory.

Henley Hawks’s game at home to Barnes was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
