ALCHESTER were unable to kickstart the new year with a victory as they fell to a 20-7 defeat at home to high-flying Abingdon on Saturday.

In a physical BB&O Premier encounter, the hosts failed to to take their opportunities and fly half Chris Stables slotted two penalties to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.

Abingdon’s clinical work with the boot continued after the break, resulting in Robert Tyreman and Callum Percival touching down from well-placed balls over the top.

Alchester’s try was scored by Neil Bee on 60 minutes.

This Saturday, Alchester will be trying to get back on track against Wheatley.

In Southern Counties North, Bicester lost 22-19 at home to Swindon College Old Boys.

A Charlie Grabe penalty gave the hosts an early lead, but Bicester responded through Dave Hampton’s try, which Dan Spencer converted to make it 7-3.

With visiting hooker Gareth Evans in the bin, Swindon took advantage with Grabe converting his own try, but Bicester replied when Peter Tarrega went over.

However, it was Swindon who led 15-12 at the break as Kalum House crossed.

Bicester retook the lead when Craig Smith crossed and Hampton added the extras.

But their advantage was wiped out when Jack Kimber dotted down and Grabe converted.

This Saturday, Bicester make the short trip to second-placed Aylesbury who they lost to 33-32 in a thrilling game in September.
