JACK Briggs scored a hat-trick of tries as Alchester recorded their first victory of the season with a 28-3 win over Wheatley in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Division.

After three games, they sit seventh in the table with eight points.

Alchester began their campaign with narrow defeats to Tadley and Abingdon, but put in a solid performance to pick up their first victory and a four-try bonus point.

It took just five minutes for Alchester to get on the scoreboard.

After some solid forward play set the platform for a well drilled backs move, centre Jack Briggs ran in for the first try.

Wheatley responded soon after with their only score – a converted penalty.

Alchester added their second score after the break when winger Mario da Silva, who saw yellow not long after, went over.

And even though they were down to 14, the hosts extended their lead as Briggs stretched his legs to break a couple of tackles and cross for his second score.

Wheatley pushed for a reply, but despite spending five minutes camped inside the Alchester 22 they were kept at bay.

The hosts lost a second man to the sin-bin as Charlie Surman was adjudged to interfere from the floor.

But after they were back to full strength, the hosts went on to secure a fourth try for the bonus point.

Slick hands from the back line and a punching run from forward Dan Kimber allowed Briggs to complete his hat-trick.

Alchester take a break from the league this weekend when they face BB&O Championship side Didcot in the preliminary round of the Oxfordshire County Shield on Saturday.

They then return to Premier Division action a week later when they make the trip to bottom side Chipping Norton.
