London Welsh assistant coach Gordon Ross admitted it’s possible that the Exiles could go a full season without victory, but said he still thinks a win is coming, writes Matthew Bruce.

Welsh travel to Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership today (3) looking to avoid a 25th straight defeat in all competitions as the spectre of a winless season looms large.

“It could happen,” Ross acknowledged.

“We’re 24 games in now and we haven’t managed to win one yet, so we’re certainly aware of that possibility.

“But we’re a very confident group and I think it’s only a matter of time until we get that first win.”

Well points adrift at the bottom of the table, relegation is looking increasingly likely for the Exiles, but Ross hasn’t given up hope of a turnaround in form.

The former Scottish international, who has already experienced relegation from the Premiership with Welsh as a player, said escaping was unlikely, but not impossible.

“If we get one then I think we could get a few more, but obviously it’s going to be really tough,” said Ross.

“I’m sure something similar has happened before somewhere, but we know it’s a big ask.”

With eight matches left, Welsh still have plenty of opportunities to pick up a first victory, and Ross is confident it will come sooner rather than later.

He added: “With a lot of hard work and a little luck we’ll get that win and I think we could go on and win at least two or three of the games we have coming up.

“Don’t get me wrong, obviously we’re bottom of the league on merit, but I don’t think we’re too far away from that first win. We’re just desperate now to go out and perform to our best.”
