Despite going into the final stage of the season without a win, London Welsh are “excited” about returning to top-flight action after a five-week break, according to assistant coach Matthew Ferguson, writes SIMON WILLIAMS.

And he insists the Exiles – at the foot of the table with just a point – do not a miracle to avoid relegation, just consistency for 80 minutes of games.

The Exiles have lost all 23 matches – 13 of them in the Premiership – so far this season and are marooned at the bottom of the league table with just a point.

Asked whether Welsh would manage to avoid relegation, Ferguson said: “If we don’t win a game, then the answer is ‘no’.

“It’s not about miracles, it’s about ‘can we win a rugby match?’ If we perform as well as we can, we will win rugby matches in the Premiership.”

He insisted that Welsh are not yet doomed to relegation because he believes that if they get that elusive first win, other victories will follow.

Welsh face Sale Sharks at the Kassam Stadium tomorrow and Ferguson says the Exiles’ last four games – in the European Challenge Cup and LV= Cup – show they have improved since their last Premiership fixture on January 11, a 37-7 defeat against fellow strugglers Newcastle Falcons.

“Everyone can see how we have improved our game plan. This has created a buzz around the changing room,” he said.

“In the last four weeks, we have improved, but the one thing missing is the win.”
