Oxford University scrum half Sam Egerton could face a lengthy ban tonight at an RFU disciplinary hearing into his Varsity Match sending-off.
Egerton will go before a three-man panel at the Coventry M6 Holiday Inn, charged with making contact with the eye(s) or eye area of an opponent contrary to Law 10.4.
The 21-year-old law student became the first player in the Varsity Match’s 141-year history to be sent off after TV replays showed him gouging the face of Cambridge replacement Nick Viljoen.
Egerton apologised via captain John Carter after the match, saying the clash had been accidental.
The IRB recommended ban for the offence starts at 12 weeks.
